SUPER SESSION: Press Relations (PR) Act as a Powerful Force Multiplier for Charity Fundraising. Transforming a charity’s mission into compelling, earned media stories that drive public engagement, build credibility, and attract donors requires special knowledge. Unlike paid advertising, PR offers “social proof,” where independent media coverage authenticates the urgency and integrity of a cause, often persuading donors to choose one charity over competitors. The power of press relations in charity fundraising can elevate credibility and trust; provide a third-party endorsement that paid ads cannot, assuring potential donors that the organization is legitimate and effective; archived news stories serve as lasting documentation of a charity’s impact, which major donors and grant-makers frequently review during due diligence; reaches audiences outside a charity’s immediate network, introducing the cause to new, potential individual and corporate donors. And much more. Learn the key PR tactics for fundraising impact.

Returning to the United Way Campaign Cabinet for a second year, Paul remains buoyed by the success of Peterborough Performs: Musicians Against Homelessness that he organized and produced. The live music event raised $30,000 for homelessness and shelter initatives supported by the United Way. “Few organizations, if any, bring this compassionate and giving community together like the United Way Campaign, and Peterborough Performs only served to strengthen my belief in that,” says Paul. “I’m delighted, humbled and excited to be back on Cabinet. I look very much forward to working with my Cabinet colleagues and United Way staff toward the common goal of helping member agencies meet the ever increasing needs of those who turn to them for assistance.” Rellinger Writing Services

SPEAKER: BROOKE ERICKSON, BE FUNDRAISING. The first 15 years of my career were largely in the public sector. I had done significant fundraising and governance work on various boards, including the McGill Organic Food Co-op and Sierra Club Ontario, but professionally I worked in various public communications and outreach roles, and always felt like I was spinning my wheels. In 2018, I pivoted abruptly into the non-profit world. My communications background was highly transferrable into fundraising, and I began to have success right away. I worked with various mentors, took advantage of countless professional development opportunities, and by my third year as a fundraiser, I had acquired my CFRE (Certified Fund Raising Executive) and had built a $1,000,000.00 fundraising program that accounted for half of the organizational revenue. Our starting point had been just under $200,000. Today, after having worked with numerous organizations to help them with their fundraising strategy and next steps, I’m excited to help more organizations build their fundraising program from the ground up.
BE FUNDRAISING.
